Funeral Services for Veteran of World War Held at Artesia Today.


Funeral Services for John D. Butts, veteran of the World War, were held from Artesia Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon.


Mr. Butts, who was a native of Artesia, passed away at his home in Tuscumbia, Ala, Tuesday night after an illness extending over several years.


Mr. Butts had been a resident of Tuscumbia for five years, locating there from Washington, D. C., where he held a position with the department of agriculture.


He was a member of the American Legion Post of Tuscumbia, and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Masonic Order, and the Knights of Pythias. He received his education at Mississippi State College and while there was on the varsity football team.


Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Selena Butts, and a brother, George W. Butts, of Memphis, Tenn., an aunt, Mrs. A. N. Butts of Artesia, and a large family connection.


Funeral Services were conducted by the Rev. T. L. McDonald, pastor of the Methodist Church of Tuscumbia, of which Mr. Butts was a member. He was assisted by the Methodist pastor of Artesia. Interment was in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery.


The active pallbearers were his boyhood friends: J. N. Roberts, Jr., George Boozer, John McIlwain, C. D. Prichard, William Cook, Sr., H. H. Smith, H. Y. Medlock, Max Peterson, C. E. Henley. The honorary pallbearers in Tuscumbia were Joseph Hurston, J. F. Sherrod, William Howard, Hon. A. H. Carmichael, Dr. Trapp, A. F. M. Harris, Col. Mitchell, Thomas Buckley, John Delaney, Sr., John Delaney, Jr.


Accompanying the remains from Tuscumbia were Joseph Hurston, J. E. Sherrod, John E. Delaney, Sr., Jimmy Mays, Raphael Semmes, Mr. And Mrs. Earl Baker, Mr. And Mrs. Robert Harris, Mr. And Mrs. T. A. Wilson and children, Evelyn and Thurman Allen, Jr.
